New @ Epiphany

At Epiphany Church on the west side of Chicago, we converted an abandoned lot into a garden that our neighbors enjoy. We also use the garden for worship and parties. The project has been made possible by the generous donations of St. Mary’s Park Ridge, All Saints Western Springs, Transfiguration Palos Park, St. Marks Evanston, Christ Church Winnetka, Christy Webber Landscapes, D&D Demolition, Yuri Ironworks, Midwest Groundcover, neighborhood residents, and lots of loving work by members of our parish and residents of Cathedral Shelter’s Higgins House.
Over two years the garden has grown and matured despite a drought last year. The men of Higgins House watered diligently to keep everything going during the many, many rainless days. The plants have survived and even flourished. We have two nesting pair of goldfinch, numerous butterflies, and assorted urban wildlife.
Our neighbors enjoy the garden as a welcome refuge. The men of Higgins House come and sit under the cool shade of the old mulberry tree. Passer-bys stop for a rest and children from our summer feeding program play with their families. Visitors to the Mexican Consulate enjoy the garden as the wait for friends and relatives to finish their business across the street.
We enjoy the garden for worship and celebrations. Our garden parties have raised funds for Hurricane Katrina victims in New Orleans and one of our parishioner's medical missions to Ecuador. In the summer months we enjoy worshiping among the flowers and trees.
